“What is ‘innovative’ about innovative leadership?’ she asks. A fair question. “What you’re saying sounds so logical,” she continues.
During my research I sometimes asked myself the same question. Most managers know that it pays to investigate new developments. That being authentic yields more than playing the boss. That it is better to let skilled employees do what they are good at, instead of ‘operationally guiding’ them (read: micro-managing). Why do we see so little of this behavior in organizations?
The art is in the DOING. Just as you cannot run a marathon by just printing a training schedule (at least I can’t), innovation in your organization cannot be achieved by describing in your strategy that you want that. You will have to work on it every day. With the right actions, the right mindset, the right people.
